Discover the work of Iguazú Quintet through a series of recordings made by the ensemble over the past few years.
From the tango of Astor Piazzolla to the more modern melodies of contemporary composers.
Todo Ayer
Todo Ayer is a piece composed by the Argentine bandoneon player Rodolfo Mederos.
After many collaborations with Astor Piazzolla throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Rodolfo Mederos went on to pursue his own musical path, notably with his own quintet, through which he developed a vision of Tango Nuevo more deeply infused with pop and rock — an approach that Todo Ayer perfectly embodies.
Le Rêve de Maya
Le Rêve de Maya is a piece written by French guitarist Samuel Strouk in the form of a concerto for cello, accordion, and symphony orchestra.
It is a rich work, drawing on a wide range of influences, notably jazz, tango, and Balkan music. For the album Passages, released in 2023, Iguazú Quintet created a brand-new arrangement of the piece from a chamber music perspective, highlighting the concerto’s main thematic sections.
Stare Miasto
Originally composed for guitar and clarinet by Belgian guitarist Boris Gaquere, this piece was later reworked for guitar, accordion, and string orchestra as part of the Concerto de Sedan.
We decided to arrange this work once again, this time in a chamber music setting for quintet.
A Partir de Aqui
Composed by Tomás Gubitsch, this piece unfolds with a complex and nervous rhythmic character, revealing a work whose sometimes unsettling accents make great demands on its performers.
Un Viaje en Taxi
A modern piece with film noir overtones, composed by Rodolfo Mederos.
Decantaciones de Encantaciones
Tomás Gubitsch is a composer and guitarist with a prolific career, and this work is a reminder of just how wide-ranging his inspirations are. The use of the classical guitar evokes the popular roots of tango, while the piece’s rhythmic complexity points toward jazz fusion and contemporary music.
Tardecitas de Montreuil
As a pianist and composer, Pablo Murgier displays an eclectic writing style, composing for solo piano, quintet, sextet, orquesta típica, and more. Tardecitas de Montreuil stays very close to the popular roots of tango, in a more traditional and dance-like style.
Concerto de Liège
Designed by Astor Piazzolla as a double concerto for bandoneon, classical guitar, and string orchestra, the Concerto Hommage à Liège was dedicated to the Liège International Guitar Festival, where it was premiered by Piazzolla himself, with Cacho Tirao on guitar and conducted by Leo Brouwer.
For the album Amancay – Tribute to Astor Piazzolla, Iguazú Quintet created a new arrangement of this work with a more distinctly chamber music approach.
